Media ethics

 Media ethics

The medium is the message was a very interesting but cryptic video, it managed to grasp my attention for a short period because some of the words were difficult to understand. The video explains how the medium can drastically change how we see things but also how the medium can change and influence ideas to convey a whole different message. In the first video, you tuber states that ideas are like "erosion powerful and unstoppable but slow and mediums are earthquakes dramatically and even violently changing the landscape when they arrive". I feel like it's a very powerful metaphor to describe how we see the medium and ideas although the video itself was hard to follow along mainly because the topic was puzzling to understand.

The next video I watched was about the Cambridge Analytical scandal and it exposed Alexander Nix and how he had access to millions of Facebook accounts without their permission, it was told that the counselling firm Cambridge Analytica held 87 million Facebook accounts. They only had them for a short period and they were used for political advertisement, what made it suspicious was that Cambridge Analytica not only harvested data from your account but also your friends, this made a chain reaction and that is how it was able to spread so quickly. Some of the data that was harvested included things like status updates, likes, comments and even private messages, in February 2018 Nix faced a parliamentary inquiry on fake news and denied all allegations of harvesting data. The topic itself is very worrying to think about and it almost changes how I look at cookies and all data security protocols, if my information was just leaked or exposed on the internet I would feel insecure.

Cambridge Analytica scandal was a breach of privacy and in most cases, it broke the law, so was it a good thing to do well in ethical terms? No, I think Nix should've gotten more than just a suspension for seven years I mean what's stopping him from attempting such evil deeds again?

The third video was really surprising to me because I had no idea that websites were trying their hardest to keep information away from you, in the first minute of the video it explains but also exposes amazon and how they set up a dark pattern to keep the user with them. Amazon made sure you had to go through a very long strenuous maze just to delete your account because they obliviously don't want you to make that decision. It's best described as a roach motel, easy for you to get in but hard for you to get out, I think it's something to save the business in a way and Amazon isn't breaking any laws by doing it. In terms of media ethics, I think it's fine, it's not like a breach of privacy or wrong ethically all that is happening is that amazon need business and they don't want you to delete your account.

These are the links I used to get more information on the Cambridge scandal.

  1. After reading your blog Donell i have to say it was a very interesting read, you seemed to have been interested in the videos themselves. You have a very professional way of writing and grasping the reader in. I like the way you You went into good detail about all the videos and got the most important facts. You didnt seem to miss anything which shows great skills when writing a blog.

  2. Hello, after reading this blog I can say that I enjoyed the read. My favorite part after reading your blog is that you go deep into your topics like the medium is the message and how you give your opinions on it in detail and even say how the topic is confusing to understand which shows that the writer is being honest about his experience with the video.
From reading this blog I have 2 questions that are unanswered. When the writer talks about the medium is the message video, they say that they found some of the words difficult to understand and I was wondering what particular parts were hard to understand and how would you change that to make it more understandable?
After reading this blog I have learned new information on these topics that I didn’t know before, for example I didn’t know that in the Cambridge analytics scandal that 87 million accounts were accessible without users’ permission. I initially thought it was only a few thousand not in the millions. A writing technique that I learned from this blog is to try be more personal with my opinions and experiences because it worked well in this blog.
My suggestion after reading this blog is that to add the two videos that were watched in the source of the blog because there are two articles relating to the topic but not the videos that were discussed in the blog.

I enjoyed reading Donell's blog. I found it very well written and enjoyable to read. It has a good structure to it and I really enjoyed the language used, it was easy to comprehend.
I really liked that you made sure to give your own opinion at the end and I will be taking that on board for my future blog posts.
Something I would suggest would be to add introduction and conclusion paragraphs. A good introduction sets the stage for your blog and a conclusion can help reinforce the topic you are discussing. It can also help bring up your word count :)
I would also suggest making sure you have all your references in the blog.
Overall, this was a good blog post and showed that you had a good understanding of the material.

  4. Hi Donell! After reading your blog I can say that it is very well written. I can tell that you have a strong understanding of the topics discussed and I like how you did further research on the Cambridge scandal. The language used was extremely easy to understand and I like how you incorporated your own opinions and feelings into the blog post which I feel I need to do more of. I also love the image you selected. A couple things I might suggest that you could do to improve your blog even more would be to add a short introduction about the topics you will be discussing. In the first paragraph you stated that a "you tuber states that ideas are like "erosion powerful and unstoppable but slow and mediums are earthquakes dramatically and even violently changing the landscape when they arrive". ". I think it would be great to mention the youtuber who said this and the video in which it was said in (reference the information) and same for the Cambridge scandal video. These were just a couple of suggestions that you may want to use in your future blogs. Overall the blog was excellent, keep up the good work!
